NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. At Mary Immaculate we intentionally celebrate this event prior to the holidays so that our students have a deeper awareness should they participate in any of the local community celebrations that occur during the holiday break.
This year the theme - Get up! Stand up! Show up! reminds us to celebrate the many people who have driven and led change in local communities over many generations—they have been the heroes and champions of change, of equal rights and even basic human rights. The theme reinforces the need to amplify our voices and narrow the gap between aspiration and reality, good intent, and outcomes.
On Tuesday all students had the opportunity to engage in NAIDOC activities including participation in indigenous games, the creation of contemporary artworks and the viewing of traditional artefacts. We are particularly grateful to Mrs Grados for leading this initiative and for the planning and preparation that has enabled this learning to occur. Our School Support Officer team did a wonderful job in facilitating the various activities for the students and class teachers.
As Term 2 rapidly draws to a close I want to express my sincere gratitude to all members of our community for their efforts and energy throughout the term. After a long period of challenge and uncertainty this term has felt the most ‘normal’ in a very long time.
In reflecting upon the term, we have much to be grateful for and proud of.
Here is a brief recount of the additional events that have helped to bring normality back to our term and returned the rhythm of school life to our community.

LOST PROPERTY / UNIFORM LABELS

We completely understand parental frustration regarding lost and missing items.
Please ensure all uniform pieces / belongings are clearly labelled with your child’s name using permanent marker in a prominent place.
Students should know where their name is marked for easy checking.
Please encourage your child to place all items straight into their bag rather than leaving them on the playground or in the classroom.

Premiers' Reading Challenge - We now have a few more students who have already completed the challenge, and quite a few who have logged in and registered their books read so far. There are 8 weeks left to complete the challenge, so see how much you can do during the holidays. Holidays are a great time to catch up with some extra reading, especially at this time of the year when it’s cold outside.
https://products.schools.nsw.edu.au/prc/booklist/home.html
Remember Kinder – Year 2 must read 30 books, and Years 3 - 6 must read 20, with only 5 Personal Choice books allowed. If you are reading books from a series you can only count 2 towards your Challenge, any extra will be counted as Choice books, even if they are on the PRC list. We will login when we get back next term and register all the books that have been finished.
Enjoy the holidays, a great time to curl up with a book!!
The Premiers' Reading Challenge aims to encourage a love of reading for leisure and pleasure in students, and to enable them to experience quality literature. It is not a competition but a challenge to each student to read, to read more and to read more widely.
Happy reading!
