POETRY RECITAL
It is with great excitement that as a school community, we are preparing for our first ever Poetry Recital at Mary Immaculate. This will be a wonderful opportunity to use the skills of effective verbal communication taught last term in classrooms. All students will recite a poem in front of their class in Week 8 of the term. We will then have a Grade round in week 9 for the top 3 students in each class and a Whole School round in week 10 for the top 3 students in each Grade. Below are some questions and answers that may help you when having conversations with your child about the Poetry recital.
Does my child HAVE to participate?
Yes, all children will participate at a class level. Adjustments will be made for children who have individual learning plans.
How does my child choose a poem to recite?
All class teachers will have a variety of short poems your child can choose from but they are able to recite any poem, nursery rhyme, song lyrics or even a rap if they wish. It isn't about WHAT they recite... it is about the delivery.
Can my child read the poem to their class?
The Poetry recital is primarily about the skill of Vocal delivery, so speaking well is the goal. Poems only need to be VERY short so knowing them off by heart would be recommended.
We hope the Poetry Recital is an empowering experience for all the children. One that helps them develop confidence when speaking in front of their class and even more importantly, one that helps them realise they are all winners when they do things they wouldn't have done yesterday.
